Where it all began The Suffolk Coast

I’d love to tell you the story of how Mossy’s Original came to exist.

Many years ago in the town of Aldeburgh, on the Suffolk Heritage Coast, my Auntie Jo whipped up batches of the most incredible sweet bio yogurt dessert made from a family recipe handed down through the generations. An experience so curiously tasty and deliciously moreish that people would travel from miles around to buy it.

During the early ’80s, this special dessert was sold in a small grocery store on the Aldeburgh high street. ‘It used to sell out like hot cakes,’ Auntie Jo used to say. It proved so popular that she ended up making as many as 24 litres a week from her kitchen. The summer holidaymakers loved it as much as the locals. After the shop closed, Auntie Jo kept her favourite treat just for family occasions and the recipe lived on.

I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy the curiously tasty recipe at every family occasion for as long as I can remember. It was after one such occasion, and a huge jug of the delectable dessert, that I took a moment to sit and remember my very first magical taste;  ‘What a shame’, I thought, ‘that no one else gets to experience this taste!’

Once I was old enough Auntie Jo kindly passed her recipe down to me, knowing that I would carry on her passion. I started making the yoghurt myself, using her exact method – made with the same love, care and passion as she always did. I had a vision to share the curiously tasty experience with the whole world – I knew that the deliciously creamy sweet bio yogurt dessert could be enjoyed by everyone.

Together with some friends, I applied to the Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival at Snape Maltings (one of the biggest food festivals in the UK). We were given a spot in the ‘Young Producers’ area to conduct our first tasting trials with consumers and the reception was absolutely awesome! We were so thrilled with the response that I decided to quit my job, selling coffee and coffee machines, and throw all my energy into sharing this amazing creation with the world!

2015

Throughout 2015, I devoted all my time to setting up production on a larger scale – mirroring exactly the way I made it in the kitchen. Large scale production was a greater challenge than I initially anticipated – it had to be absolutely perfect in every way before I was happy to bring my creation to the market.

2016 was the year for setting up a specialist chilled distribution network to ensure Mossy’s Original reaches your fridge in perfect condition. It was an exhilarating year – we were almost ready to launch the brand. Marketing, marketing, meetings and more meetings… by November, we were finally ready!

The Mossy’s Original Tour started at the beginning of December – touring the country meeting selected store, restaurant and hotel owners for tasting sessions and discussing opportunities.

2017

In January 2017, The Mossy’s Original Tour continued… we completed our round trip of the UK on Wednesday 11th January – we’d completed visits to 118 enthusiastic retailers!

Wow, that was some trip! Mossy’s was now well and truly on the map and was officially launched on 1st February 2017. Follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to keep up to date with what’s going on in our world every day.
